Let's start a discussion on the AU Presidential search. Neil Kerwin has been great - really. He loves this place, is an alum, taught here (including me) advanced to provost, then interim president. Frankly, he gave us stability, ethics and professionalism precisely when we needed it. Words alone can't express the gratitude he and Anne have earned from those of us who love the place. So who do we attract now, that will expand on Dr Kerwin's success and avoid the pitfalls that were Berendzen and Ladner? The faculty senate expressed their preference for an academic. Is that a proper focus for a modern university? Or are things such as profile and fundraising more important? Do we need a celebrity name to raise the AU profile to the next level (I assume the endowment, construction and admissions numbers will give us a boost when US News releases their rankings later this month). So who or what should we be looking for? A former national politician and academic? People with international connections? Do we look at presidents at smaller academic-focused colleges who want a bigger stage? East coast or wider net? Play to the alumni base or expand into other areas? Deans of professional schools at name brand universities whose ability to move up is currently blocked? Are ties to big city and big business donors essential? I know that the search committee is deep into this highly secretive process, but it might be enjoyable to engage in some conjecture. Anyone, anyone, Bueller?
