Junior Aleksandra Kazala won her second straight Patriot League Player of the Year award today and was voted first team all-PL by the league's coaches for the second straight year. In addition, sophomore Kristen Largay was named the PL's Libero of the Year (basically, best defensive player; the libero's role is to dig out spikes and other scoring attempts by the opposition). Three players--freshman outside hitter Helena Elbaek, sophomore middle blocker Vela McBride and junior setter Kennedy Etheridge--were voted second team all PL. (And almost all of the team will return in 2017-18!)
With a 15-1 conference record, and in the midst of a 16-match win streak, the 24-7 Eagles are again the top seed going into the PL Tournament, and will again host at Bender this Saturday and Sunday. AU will play fourth-seeded Lehigh in the first semifinal at 2, with two seed Navy playing three seed Army in the second semi after our match. Once again, this is the most successful and dominant team at our school, and they deserve to have a huge turnout Saturday and Sunday as they go for a fifth straight PL Tournament championship--and, incredibly, a 15th PL Tournament title and NCAA bid in the 17 years we've been in the Patriot League. What Barry Goldberg has done over two decades as the head coach at AU is incredible, and he deserves our thanks and praise.
