The most successful athletic program in AU history continued its reign of dominance Sunday afternoon at Bender, as volleyball won its 14th Patriot League title in the last 16 years and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a four-set win over second-seeded Colgate. The Eagles rallied from a 19-14 fourth-set deficit to win the clinching set 25-21. AU will find out where it's going in the NCAAs next Sunday.
The Eagles were led by PL Player of the Year Aleksandra Kazala, a sophomore (!) who was also first-team all PL and PL Tournament MVP. She had 20 kills in the championship match, including the final one to give AU the tournament victory. AU is now 27-7 on the season, having gone 15-1 in PL play. We are 28-0 in PL Tournament matches played at Bender. Coach Barry Goldberg's record in the PL the last four years is now, including tournament play, 69-3. He is a remarkable coach and we are so lucky to have him. We really shouldn't take this kind of excellence for granted. Good crowd Sunday, but I always think it should be better, given how successful he and the team have been for so long.
This is an especially satisfying title, considering two of our major inside players have missed the whole season with injuries, and we had to coach up a freshman at the libero position. Our team was so young and relatively undersized, yet the young women came through again to put yet another championship banner up in Bender Arena. Congrats to all and good luck in the NCAAs!
Thanks NJJ. Kudos to Barry and the team. Great coach, and great athletes. And, if I'm not mistaken, we lose only one senior to graduation. Her loss will be made up for with the three women coming back from injury. The dynasty continues!
